We at Subharti Institute of Cancer Management and Research have twice a week tumor board meeting where each and every cancer case discussed in details for diagnosis, staging and management based on recent evidence and protocols. Each case is discussed with team of expert to know “What is correct & best way to treat this case”, “any advanced or new treatment for this case” (e.g. Targeted therapy, gene therapy)”, “can we tailor his / her treatment” etc. For holistic approach and correct treatment, we follow International Guidelines for treatment. e.g.

About Cancer Treatment:
Cancer is a big taboo for society. It can be prevented in 50% of case by raising awareness among local public to leave use of cancer-causing toxic materials like tobacco, arsenic, asbestosetc, wide spread use of timely vaccination for HPV, Hepatitis B etc., adopting healthy life style and intake of healthy diet. Cancer cells are abnormal cells within the body that grow in in uncontrolled and unprogrammed ways and forms ulcers or tumor that eighter damage or the organs where they live or can spread in surrounding structure or spread to any part of body.
Standard treatment for most of cancer are-

1. 1.Surgery: In this, surgeon removecancerous tumour from your body and doctor known as surgical Oncologist or speciality surgeon specialist in organ based surgery like Thoracic Oncologist, Endocrine and breast oncologist, GI Oncologist and Uro-Oncologist etc.
2. 2.Radiation therapy: It is most important treatment and almost all patient require Radiation therapy during his journey of cancer treatment either before or in between or later on. Such doctors are known as Radiation Oncologist. Radiation oncologist uses special types of very powerful ray that can kills cancer cells inside body. These rays are invisible e.g. gamma rays or electron, proton, carbon particles etc.These rays are special as neither we can see, nor feel. and chemotherapy.
3. 3.Chemotherapy: like antibiotic that kills bacteria. Chemotherapy are cytotoxic medicines in the form of injections or tablets that kills cancer cells. Thesedoctors are called Medical Oncologist.

Cancer treatment in Today’s Era-

1. 1.Multidisciplinary team approach:
Cancer treatment is evolving rapidly. Lots of development and advancement happened in all field eg., High end robotic True beam linear accelerator, multichannel HDR Computerized Brachytherapy in Radiation Oncology, Organ preservation surgery or Laparoscopic / Robotic surgeries and some Hormonal therapy, Targeted therapy, Immunotherapy in Medical Oncology. Now cancer treatment is expanded beyond stand above 3 specialties. That involve plastic surgeon, oro-maxillofacial surgeon for reconstructions as well as physiotherapy / rehabilitate expert for good functional outcome use of prosthesis for speech or movement. Sometime special cancer may be treated with special treatment done by Nuclear medicine colleague like Iodine therapy, Lu therapy, Sr therapy etc.


2. 2.Personalized approach to incurable cancer:
Some times are excising treatment is not able to give satisfactory result. For this situation, science have developed some special test e.g. liquid biopsy where we able to abnormality (called Mutations) presentin the cancer cells that can be destroyed by targeting these abnormality and ultimately destroy cancer cells.
3. 3.Novel Therapy for Cancer-
There is a lot of research work is going on genetic therapy where we able to correct abnormality present in gene so that we may able to cure some incurable paediatric cancer patient e. g. or Car T cell therapy

What to do if we have suspected for Cancer?
Whenever, your primary care or family doctor suspect that one may have cancer, he may do some routine blood test, special blood test called tumor marker (e.g. Ca 19.9, CEA, Ca 125, AFP, LDH etc), FNAC, Biopsy, CT scan, USG abdomen or may refer you to consult Oncologist (Surgical, Radiation or Medical) for diagnosis and confirmation. Once diagnosis is confirmed. Oncologist may advise CT scan or chest, USG abdomen or PET CT to know stage or spread of disease.
What is Tumour board?
Tumour board is a team of different specialty that are involved in management of cancer treatment e.g. Radiation Oncologist, Surgical Oncologist, Medical Oncologist, Specialty surgeon, Radiologist, Pathologist, genetic couseller etc. Every case is discussed in tumour board to decide plan of treatment, sequence of treatment and any special way to manage some unique case etc. this multi-modality approach is associated with best hange of cure and higher quality of life.
